Female Golden Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss ssp aguabonita); Yosemite National Park. Native to the headwaters of the Kern River drainage, the Golden trout is among the most coveted sportfish due to its rarity, remote high elevation habitat, difficulty to catch, and sheer beauty. It is actually a subspecies of rainbow trout that has evolved brilliant coloration to match the reds, golds and bronze colors of its natural mountain stream habitat. Because they are the same species as rainbow, wherever the two fish have been stocked together, their traits have mixed. Copyright © 2008 James McGrew.
