High Country and High Sierra Camps

Some of my favorite places in Yosemite are on the High Sierra Loop trip through the High Sierra camps: Tuolumne, Glen Aulin, May Lake, Sunrise, Merced Lake, and Vogelsang. Here's a brief photo tour of some of the sights from the camps and trails along the way in the order of the seven day loop trip.

Steller's Jay Feather that appears blue, though not due to blue pigment. Rather, bird feathers scatter the blue wavelengths of the spectrum giving the illusion of blue when viewed at certain angles. Try rotating a "blue" feather and notice how it shifts from blue to gray, brown or even black.

  • Rainbow/Golden trout. Although I take a few hundred Eastern brook trout from Yosemite's waters every summer in effort to help the native frogs (and for food), I very rarely fish for or kill goldens and when I do, I always take time for a special photograph. They are truly beautiful even if they are not native and unfortunately impact the native ecosystem. Copyright © 2008 James McGrew.
  • Garter Snake in the Merced River; Merced Lake HSC. Notice the bulge in its body? Highly aquatic garter snakes often hunt for trout underwater. This snake just caught a fish. Copyright © 2004 James McGrew.
  • This girl picked up an obsidian point without realizing that it was not only illegal to remove it from its location, but causes problems for archaeologists who wish to study artifacts where they were originally left behind. • No, Danger Rave is not talking about a fish, but rather the width between a bear's eyes that he once encountered. I'd say its become a pretty famous campfire story in the high country. Copyright © 2008 James McGrew.
