High Country and High Sierra Camps

Some of my favorite places in Yosemite are on the High Sierra Loop trip through the High Sierra camps: Tuolumne, Glen Aulin, May Lake, Sunrise, Merced Lake, and Vogelsang. The lake is named for Chief Tanaya who was captured near this area. However, Tenaya called the lake Py-wi-ack, meaning "Lake of the Shining Rocks."

Even in mid-summer, backpackers frequently encounter frosty mornings at 9,400 ft elevation.
