High Country and High Sierra Camps

Some of my favorite places in Yosemite are on the High Sierra Loop trip through the High Sierra camps: Tuolumne, Glen Aulin, May Lake, Sunrise, Merced Lake, and Vogelsang. Here's a brief photo tour of some of the sights from the camps and trails along the way in the order of the seven day loop trip.

  • Most high country excursions start in Tuolumne Meadows. Mts. Dana, Gibbs, and Mammoth Peak mark the skyline.

  • Columnar Basalt at the Little Devil's Postpile along the Tuolumne River on the way to Glen Aulin. This iron and magnesium rich lava flowed about 9 million years ago. As the lava cooled and contracted, it fractured to accommodate the stress and thereby forming the mostly hexagonal columns referred to as columnar joints.
  • Tuolumne Falls. Note how the fall drops in a series of stair steps. These are the result of fractures called Joints that form in the granodiorite, similar to the columnar basalt, only on a much larger scale.
