A few examples of some of Yosemite's abundant wildlife. Thought not known for the big animals like Yellowstone, a diverse array of beautiful creatures inhabit Yosemite and play important roles in its complex ecosystems.

James McGrew > Steller's Jay ©2012 James McGrew I sat down on some rocks to paint a view of Upper Yosemite Falls when this Steller's Jay flew nearby foraging in the trees and momentarily perching on a rock as if to look over my shoulder and inspect the painting in progress.

James McGrew > Amorous Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeiana) in Woski Pond. The Bullfrog is not native to Yosemite. They are voracious predators that will eat anything they can get their mouths around including birds, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, and are implicated in the decline or local extinction of the California Red-legged frog and the Western Pond turtle. As a result, park biologists work to remove the bullfrog from Yosemite's warm water ponds.

While painting early one morning in Yosemite Valley, I heard some footsteps behind me and looked back to find this deer and her fawn feeding beneath the shadows of the incense cedars less than 20 feet away. She stepped into the light just long enough for a photograph.
